I am a huge Nigella fan. She is now touring for her new book. But just listening to 7 minutes and 20 seconds of Nigella speaking to Steve Innskeep is not enough. I had to look up old NPR interviews with her. It’s fun to hear how the male interviewers are extra tickled when speaking with her.
She was talking about how she has no shame about using ready-cut vegetables or fruit to aid in the speed of getting a meal on the table. She got the idea while shopping at the most beautiful market that I hope to visit one day – Rialto Market in Venice. The lady at the pumpkin stall had a lovely display of pumpkins but also had some cut-up pumpkin for sale. She said that if it’s good enough for the Italians, it’s good enough for her.
This reminded me of my trip to Thailand earlier this year. I was walking through their farmers markets and saw the same – prepared/cut up vegetables.
Are we really getting so busy that we can’t stop to peel the onions? Still, I think that it’s better that we try to find shortcuts in preparation and not just resorting to microwaving a processed packaged product.
